My project
Wildfires represent a challenging issue for Public Health because the combination of burning temperatures and smoke results in high air pollution which is associated with short- and long-term risks for respiratory and cardiac diseases. Moreover, during combustion, organic matter burns to produce contaminants that will adhere to the surface of wildfire smoke particles, and these environmental contaminants are already known for their role in cancer promotion. During the NEWS-2-CHANGE project, I will design small molecules capable of capturing the contaminants that adhere to wildfire smoke. By doing so, I will obtain materials that suppress the carcinogens associated with environmental pollutants. Overall, the NEWS-2-CHANGE project will be developed at the interface of environmental sciences, immunology, and technology transfer for the obtainment of protective materials for wildfire health management.
